RMA of New York Publishes
Study on Reducing Multiples Resulting From IVF
In the competitive IVF industry we live in today, there are IVF centers
out there that may, in an attempt to improve apparent success rates,
transfer a greater number of embryos. The actual physical, emotional, and
financial costs of this strategy may be far greater than realized because of
the increased morbidity that is associated with multiple pregnancies. Given
that multiple gestation is the greatest risk factor for premature delivery,
it is logical to conclude that a cavalier attitude toward multiples will
lead to significant future neonatal morbidity, if not mortality.
The current method of calculating IVF success rates considers multiple
gestations and prematurely delivered infants to be successes, rather than
failures. Patients may see multiple births as an acceptable outcome and may
even construe multiple gestations as actualizing a better return on their
financial investment. They may be less aware about the greater risk of
neonatal morbidity and pregnancy loss. When patients evaluate IVF programs
on the basis of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention-reported data,
they may conclude that a program with a higher success rate may be
preferable to a program with a reduced success rate, even if the latter
program has a very low multiple-pregnancy rate.
For the purposes of the study, RMA of New York chose to evaluate how
reclassifying IVF success would change the current way we perceive programs.
By incorporating higher order multiple gestation rates into the calculation
of success rates, we attempted

RMA of New York Participates
in HOPE Study for Egg Freezing Patients
RMA of New York is participating in EMD Serono'ss Human Oocyte
Preservation Experience (HOPE) Registry, an observational study undertaken
to evaluate the safety and efficacy of oocyte cryopreservation techniques.
The HOPE Registry aims to track the outcome of oocyte cryopreservation
cycles from participating cycles around the country and to validate the
efficacy of the different techniques used to freeze and thaw eggs. Results
of safety and efficacy of egg freezing techniques along with pregnancy
outcomes resultant from the thawing of cryopreserved eggs will be published
for public access upon completion of the study.
Stated Dr. Alan Copperman in a press release: "We need to validate the
safety and efficacy of egg freezing for it to become a more widely available
option for women who for a variety of reasons would like to preserve their
fertility. The HOPE Registry is an exciting vehicle that will assist us in
the evidence-gathering process and will facilitate the furthering of the
science and the acceptance of oocyte cryopreservation as an effective
clinical practice."
If you would like to know more about oocyte cryopreservation and the HOPE
Study, please contact our office at 212-756-5777 or email us at info@rmany.com.
